Altro is the British safety-vinyl manufacturer with the strongest single claim in commercial flooring: their flagship Altro Stronghold 30 is guaranteed at PTV ≥ 36 (Pendulum Test Value, wet) for the full service life of the floor. No other vinyl, no resin coating, no tile system makes the same warranty. For commercial kitchens, hospital wet zones, food production, and wet labs where slip-fall liability is the dominant risk, Altro Stronghold 30 is the spec.
What makes Altro structurally different from resin
Resin floors (epoxy, PU-cement, MMA) are poured liquid systems that cure on the substrate. Their slip resistance comes from aggregate broadcast into the wear coat or from textured trowel work; both wear over time as the matrix above abrades. Most resin systems eventually settle to PTV 24–32 after five to eight years of service — below the BS 7976-2 wet-area threshold of PTV ≥ 36.
Altro's calendered vinyl is structurally different. The aggregate is integral to the vinyl matrix at manufacturing, not broadcast on top. Wearing the vinyl exposes more aggregate, not less — the slip resistance is maintained through the floor's full thickness. This is the engineering basis for the lifetime PTV warranty: the floor delivers ≥ 36 PTV at install, at year five, and at year fifteen.
The product range
- Altro Stronghold 30
- 3.0 mm safety vinyl, R12 slip class. Lifetime PTV ≥ 36. The reference SKU for commercial kitchens, hospital wet zones, food production. Heat-welded seams for fully waterproof installation.
- Altro Aquarius
- 2.0 mm safety vinyl optimised for barefoot wet areas (pool surrounds, changing rooms, hospital shower zones). Wet bare-foot PTV ≥ 36 warranty.
- Altro XpressLay
- Adhesive-free safety vinyl — installs over existing substrate without glue. Used for retrofit, temporary installations, and projects where existing substrate adhesives are unknown.
- Altro Suprema II
- 2.0 mm safety vinyl with R11–R12 slip. Mid-spec for retail, light commercial, education.
- Altro Transflor
- Transport-specific vinyl for bus, train, ship interior floors. R-class slip plus impact-resistant filler.
- Altro Whiterock
- Wall cladding system, sister category to safety vinyl. Used in commercial kitchens and food prep alongside Stronghold 30 for full wet-zone cladding.
Where Altro wins
- Lifetime PTV warranty is a real legal asset. When a slip-fall claim lands at a commercial kitchen or hospital, the lifetime PTV documentation closes the negligence question. No resin floor offers an equivalent.
- Speed of install. Vinyl rolls install faster than resin pour. For projects with tight production-shutdown windows, the difference is days, not hours.
- Heat-welded seams. Welded vinyl is fully waterproof at the seams when correctly installed. Resin floors are monolithic which is simpler, but the substrate-to-coating interface is the failure point — vinyl puts the seam in the welded thermoplastic which is more durable than the resin-substrate bond.
- Cleanable to medical standard. Vinyl surface is non-porous and chemically inert; no sealer to renew, no matrix to discolour.
Where Altro loses
- Heavy industrial. Vinyl is wrong for heavy industrial point-load environments — forklifts, pallet-trucks at scale, hot-vessel proximity. Resin (PU-cement specifically) owns this segment.
- Aesthetic flexibility. Vinyl colour and pattern range exists but does not approach the design flexibility of decorative resin or microcement systems. For design-driven hospitality and retail, Altro is not the answer.
- Per-square-metre cost. At equivalent slip-resistance spec, Altro is more expensive than mid-range resin coatings. The premium is for the warranty, not for the material.
- Polyflor Polysafe is the direct competitor. The two brands compete head-to-head in the IL safety-vinyl tender space. The decision often comes down to local installer preference and project channel — see Polyflor brand profile.
Final read
Altro is the right specification for commercial kitchens, hospital wet zones, food prep, and wet labs where slip-fall liability dominates the spec. The lifetime PTV warranty is real and enforceable. It is the wrong specification for heavy industrial, design-led commercial, or projects with tight per-square-metre budgets where mid-grade resin closes the requirement. For the IL spec, Altro Stronghold 30 is the default in healthcare-grade kitchen tenders; Polyflor Polysafe is the credible head-to-head alternative.
